Former Texas GOP Chairman: Bush and Rove betrayed conservative principles
Dallas Morning News - Former Texas GOP chairman Tom Pauken knows George W. Bush and Karl Rove very well, having served with both during Bush’s ascendancy to power in the early 90’s – and Pauken is just the latest conservative to claim that Bush and Rove did more to destroy the conservative movement than the Democrats ever could hope to.  Pauken’s claims appear similar to those of other prominent conservatives such as Richard Viguerie, who’ve made the case that Bush’s presidency was a disaster for conservatism and the GOP.

How Quick the Message Fades
enterstageright.com (Frank Salvato) - “It is stunning to find out that there are still some elected officials in Washington DC  especially on the Right side of the aisle  who dont fully understand the message being sent by the American citizenry regarding their grotesque spending addiction. No, Im not talking about earmarks or pork barrel spending, which in and of themselves should be egregious enough to warrant defeat in the next election. I am referring to how US Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) was thrown under the bus when he demanded that his fellow Senators actually allocate existing funds for a program they wanted to implement.”

Did Republicans learn a lesson from Jim Bunning?
American Thinker - Jed Skillman writes that as a baseball player, Jim Bunning was a Hall of Fame-caliber pitcher who often kept his team in the game – and now as a Senator, he’s done the same thing for the Republican Party, if they can only learn from his example.  Bunning successfully won a couple minor ‘concessions’ from the Democrats in order to end his objection to a spending measure – and now the spending debate that Bunning was after will take place right around tax time.  Bunning’s strategy kept his GOP ‘teammates’ in the game – now they need to help win it.

The conservative movement has all the energy right now

Wall Street Journal  – Polls across the country are revealing the reemergence of the conservative movement, but none more so than in Florida, where grassroots favorite Marco Rubio has surged ahead of the GOP establishment’s choice, Gov. Charlie Crist, for the state’s Republican U.S. Senate nomination.  One political scientist (Prof. Matthew Corrigan) in Florida explained Rubio’s surprisingly large 18-point lead this way:

Investors Business Daily (Richard A. Viguerie) -  Richard Viguerie sees the addition of a fourth ‘leg’ to the conservative table, which comes in the form of the rapidly growing Tea Party movement. The new Tea Party ‘leg’ is unique because it is truly independent (whereas the conservative movement became an appendage of the GOP) — and although conservatives may not always like what the Tea Party has to say, it would be unwise not to listen to them.

Tea parties are a new Great Awakening
Washington Examiner (Glenn Reynolds) -

“This past weekend’s National Tea Party Convention in Nashville, Tenn., made it clear that the Tea Party movement is part of something bigger: America’s Third Great Awakening.

“America’s prior Great Awakenings, in the 18th and 19th centuries, were religious in nature. Unimpressed with self-serving, ossified and often corrupt religious institutions, Americans responded with a bottom-up reassertion of faith and independence.

“This time, it’s different. It’s not America’s churches and seminaries that are in trouble: It’s America’s politicians and parties. Conservative Republican Participation

Red State (Morton Blackwell) – “Now is the time for all good conservatives to work together whenever we can to promote conservative principles successfully through the Republican Party.

“The time is ripe for this because non-conservative Republicans have lost so many elections that, for instance in the House of Representatives, they have an almost negligible presence in public office. Let’s build a new majority party which opportunists cannot cripple again by selling out conservative principles.”

CNBC’s Santelli: Tea Party Popularity ‘Dollar-Friendly’

Business and Media Institute – “On CNBC yesterday, Rick Santelli, the inspiration for the Tea Party Movement, put forth the argument that the current strength of that movement makes congressional gridlock more likely, slows government spending and props up the dollar:

“This new poll that shows the ‘Tea Party’ is more popular than Republicans and Democrats, I think that at the heart of that is – you can pass anything you want in the middle of the night, doesn’t mean it’s going to ever be reconciled by both houses or be signed by anybody and I think that’s a big dollar-friendly as well.”

Hurray for Sally Knutson!

TheUnion.com   (Sally Knutson “Hurray for Patriots!” Letter to the Editor) – “We are not a mob! We are not ‘in your face!’ If you don’t agree with our premise, walk on by. We don’t stand on overpasses dressed in black. We are passionate about what we believe. We agree bigger government is not the answer to our country’s problems. We do not think that spending more of our money to put people to work in government jobs is our duty. We would like to see the Constitution enforced and interpreted by judges who read it as our first law.”

The Pay Czar is Unconstitutional

Wall Street Journal (Michael W. McConnell) – “Last week’s announcement that ‘Pay Czar’ Kenneth Feinberg slashed compensation for executives at seven large financial firms by an average of 50% stunned Wall Street, stoked the fires of populist resentment, and troubled economists. Will this government-mandated pay cut drive the most talented professionals away from these companies, endangering their recovery? Does it augur further politicization of economic decisions?

“Lost in the arguments over economics and political theory, however, is a more basic question: Was this action constitutional?”

New RNC Ad “Goes Tea Party”

Hot Air – A new RNC ad is killing “two birds with one stone … , using an all-senior cast to reflect grandpa’s jitters about ObamaCare and a catchphrase lifted from yesterday’s Code Red event to address tea partiers’ feelings of disenfranchisement. Throw the whippersnappin’ bums out…”

Dangers of the Overexpansion of Federal “Regulatory Crimes”

The Volokh Conspiracy – “Marie Gryphon of the Manhattan Institute, a generally conservative think tank with strong libertarian leanings, has an excellent report summarizing several dangers of the overexpansion of federal criminal law in the field of ‘regulatory crimes.’ ”

The Bill of Rights

Cato@Liberty (Tim Lynch) – “The Framers of the Constitution would not have been surprised by the relentless attempts by government to expand its sphere of control. The Framers themselves would often refer to written constitutions as mere ‘parchment barriers’ or what we would describe as ‘paper tigers.’ They nevertheless concluded that putting safeguards down on paper was better than having nothing at all.”

Daily Lickskillet: Most Republicans don’t bother us.

Retirement of Bart Gordon is a Victory for the Tea Party Movement

CHQ Staff (Michael Patrick Leahy) – “Bart Gordon, a thirteen term Democrat from Tennessee’s Sixth Congressional District, announced his retirement yesterday. Recent polls put him slightly behind Tennessee Republican State Senator Jim Tracy, the latest Republican challenger in the race, and certainly the most well known.

“Credit for Mr. Gordon’s surprise announcement of his retirement, however, must go to the Tea Party insurgents who showed his weaknesses.”

Another Look at Defunding Acorn

American Thinker (Mark Fitzgibbons) – “ACORN claims it would be an unconstitutional Bill of Attainder for Congress to defund the organization.

“As long as liberals are being persnickety about constitutional authority, perhaps they can explain where in the Constitution Congress, or the federal government generally, has the enumerated power to fund ACORN. The question is: will Republicans use this ruling as incentive to work towards not funding leftwing causes with taxpayer dollars in the first place?”

Senator Johanns Says Proposed Expansion of Medicare a Backdoor Attempt at Single-Payer

Lincoln Star Journal  – “Proposed expansion of Medicare is ‘a backdoor attempt’ to move toward a single-payer government health care system, [Nebraska] Sen. Mike Johanns said Thursday. Single-payer advocates are ‘really quite elated’ by the emerging proposal because they see it as ‘a giant step’ in their direction, Johanns said.”

The History Channel’s Anti-American Marxist Propaganda Will Air This Sunday

Michelle Malkin – “On Sunday, December 13, the History Channel will air ‘The People Speak’ – a documentary based on Marxist academic Howard Zinn’s capitalism-bashing, America-dissing, grievance-mongering history textbook, ‘A People’s History of the United States.’ The film was co-produced/written/bankrolled by Zinn’s Boston neighbor and mentee Matt Damon. An all-star cast of Bush-bashing liberals including Danny Glover, Josh Brolin, Bruce Springsteen, Marisa Tomei, and Eddie Vedder, will appear. Zinn’s work is a self-proclaimed ‘biased account’ of American history that rails against white oppressors, the free market, and the military.”

Climategate Distracts at Copenhagen

Politico – “Climategate has muddied the good green message that was supposed to come out of the United Nations climate change talks here, forcing leaders to spend time justifying the science behind global warming when they want to focus on ending it.

“Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin stirred the pot Wednesday with a Washington Post op-ed calling on President Barack Obama to boycott the Copenhagen talks over climategate and the ‘agenda-driven science’ it exposed.”

Why Leaderless Tea Parties Are Beating the GOP

Richard Viguerie  – “Rasmussen reports the Tea Party Movement, which percolated only months ago, is beating the Grand Old Party. That’s amazing — and good — news. A nascent grassroots movement is more popular than a long-established political party. Republican Party leaders should be embarrassed. Instead, the Republican establishment disdains this populist uprising.”
